Before visiting Heidelberg in September 2013, I was thoroughly unimpressed with German cities, having never been further south than Köln. But apparently, just like in the Netherlands, the architectural charm and kindness of the people greatly increases the further you go south, and arriving at Heidelberg I was amazed at the beauty of the city, almost hidden in the valley with the freshwatered Neckar running through. It's a great place for shopping, cycling, and some mild hiking in the hills surrounding the city. Taking the cable cars up to the Schloss and further up to Königstuhl is definitely worth your money and while. If you're looking for an affordable place to eat just go to one of the many Mensa's, student canteens that offer well-prepared buffet food at sharp prices (with additional discounts for Heidelberg students). We also climbed the Heiliggeistkirche, for which you're rewarded with gorgeous views. Going back to Heidelberg this May!
